There are trace amounts of borates in water. They are naturally-occurring and are an important part of a healthy diet. Plants also need borates in order to grow which is why it is used in agriculture. Borates are formed when the element boron combines with oxygen and other elements. Millions of tons of industrial borates are produced every year and are used in a wide variety of products such as detergents, wood treatments, ceramics, glass, fibreglass, and swimming pool treatments. Borates are also distributed around the planet naturally – via rain, condensation and volcanic activity. 

Borates should be used in a concentration between 30–50 ppm. Before adding it to your water, however, you need to test your pH and reduce it using muriatic acid if it’s higher than 7.8. You need to test and lower the pH because borate raises it.

You must also test your water 24 hours after adding borate to make sure the borate, pH, and TA are all within the recommended range. Borate should be around 50 ppm, with a pH between 7.4–7.6.
