Chromium Analysis

Chromium is an element that naturally occurs in water, rocks and soil. Small quantities of some forms of chromium can be good for us, but on the other hand, large amounts of others can be toxic, with increased risks of skin irritation, cancer and respiratory problems.

The type of chromium that’s commonly found in industrial waste – hexavalent chromium – is toxic, and long-term exposure can lead to damage to the kidney or liver, as well as reproductive problems.

It is therefore important to test for the presence of hexavalent chromium in your water system to prevent accidental ingestion.

FAQs

What is chromium?

Chromium is a chemical element that is corrosion-resistant, resulting in it being used widely in various industries, predominantly in the production of stainless steel. It is also used in the production of chrome plating and is found in the cast iron alloy which is widely used in water systems.

In extremely small quantities, chromium is an essential micronutrient which helps us metabolise glucose and helps to regulate insulin. While chromium supplements are available, it is better to have it as part of your natural diet through foods such as broccoli, liver and brewers’ yeast.

How does chromium get into drinking water?

Chromium is found in cast iron alloys which are commonly used in plumbing materials, but as pipes corrode, there is a buildup of scale. Trace chemicals in the water can react with the scale which creates the potentially toxic hexavalent chromium. In the UK, cast iron pipes stopped being used in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s so if your premises were built before then, testing your drinking water for chromium is advisable.

How long does the test take?

Laboratory testing takes at least 10-14 days.

What do I get once the test is complete?

Through our UKAS-accredited analysis, you will receive the results of the test as well as a certificate.
