Cobalt Analysis

Cobalt is a naturally occurring element that is used in the manufacturing of many products. Its unique combination of properties – including strength, corrosion resistance and magnetic properties means it is an ideal material for a wide range of applications. Cobalt is most commonly used to make EV batteries, superalloys for the aerospace industry, magnets, medical treatments and pigments. When used as a colouring agent, cobalt produces the distinctive blue pigment after which the shade is named.

If cobalt gets into the water supply it can cause health problems such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and heart and thyroid problems. Long-term exposure has been linked to cancers.

High levels of cobalt in the water can adversely affect industrial machinery and appliances. It can react with other chemicals to cause a buildup of scale that can eventually lead to equipment failure.

FAQs

Why do you need to test the water for cobalt?

Cobalt is a metallic element that is used for a variety of industrial applications and in some cancer treatments. It is also used in fertilisers and pesticides. In small amounts, cobalt is an essential nutrient, but it is toxic if ingested in larger quantities. Contamination occurs when untreated wastewater containing cobalt finds its way into groundwater, rivers and lakes where it enters our water supply.

How long does the test take?

Laboratory testing takes at least 10-14 days.

What do I get once the test is complete?

Through our UKAS-accredited analysis, you will receive the results from the test as well as a certificate.
