E. Coli Analysis
E. Coli Analysis
E.coli are bacteria that live inside the intestines of humans and animals. The presence of E.coli bacteria in water is usually an indicator of faecal contamination, which in turn indicates the presence of pathogens and other types of bacteria that cause disease. E.coli may also be linked with high levels of other contaminants, for example phosphorus and nitrates. In high quantities, E.coli will contribute to the cloudiness of water as well as causing unpleasant smells.
Some strains of E.coli are harmless – they naturally occur in the intestines and help digest food. However ingestion of the more harmful strains of E.coli can cause stomach aches, cramps, sickness and diarrhoea. Some strains cause more serious symptoms and can be life threatening.

How does E.coli get into our water?
As E.coli is found in faeces, it will get into our water through sewage discharge or through broken or leaking sewer pipes and septic tanks. E.coli from animals gets into the water as a result of runoff, leaks and storm runoff from manure heaps, or as a result of livestock having direct access to streams and rivers.
What are the symptoms of E.coli infection?
If someone is infected with a harmful strain of E.coli, they will usually show symptoms after three or four days. These could include mild to severe diarrhoea, stomach pain, tenderness or cramping, and occasionally nausea and vomiting. If someone has prolonged or severe symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
