Faecal Streptococci Analysis

Faecal Streptococci Analysis

Faecal streptococci is a group of microorganisms that occur naturally in the intestines of humans and mammals. The presence of faecal streptococci in water samples is therefore a sign of faecal contamination, indicating the presence of sewage or animal waste which contains a variety of organisms and pathogens that could be harmful, for example, E.coli and salmonella. If people ingest contaminated water or if it enters the body through a skin lesion, they could develop bacterial pneumonia, inflammation, a blood infection, ear infection or even bacterial meningitis.

It is therefore vital to test water for faecal streptococci to ensure it is safe for drinking or recreational activities, e.g. wild swimming and other water activities, as well as fishing.

How does faecal streptococci get into our water?

As faecal streptococci is found in faeces (as the name suggests), it will get into our water through sewage discharge or through broken or leaking sewer pipes and septic tanks. Faecal streptococci from animals gets into the water as a result of runoff, leaks and storm runoff from manure heaps, or as a result of livestock having direct access to streams and rivers.

What are the symptoms of faecal streptococci infection?

There are a variety of symptoms of a faecal streptococci infection, such as headaches, fatigue, fevers, stomach pains, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, chest pain and shortness of breath. More severe symptoms include urinary tract infections, sepsis, endocarditis (an infection of the heart’s inner lining), meningitis, and serious gum infection.
