Cyanide Analysis

There are many forms of cyanide, some of which are highly poisonous chemicals, but others are not – some forms of cyanide are used in medicines. Cyanide is also a naturally occurring chemical found in edible plants and seeds, for example almonds, soy beans and spinach.

In industry, cyanide is used in the production of a range of products, including acrylics, rubber, plastics, dyes, printing and the extraction of metals such as gold and silver. It is therefore important for manufacturers to treat their trade effluent before it enters the wastewater system.

Cyanide can accidentally enter the environment through industrial discharge and accidental spillages. Even small levels of cyanide in the water can have harmful effects on the environment where it can enter the food chain and also our drinking water. This is why it is important to regularly test the water for signs of cyanide toxicity.

FAQs

Why do we need to test water for cyanide?

Cyanide is highly poisonous. High levels of cyanide in the water can be harmful to the environment, aquatic life and humans. If it gets into the water system and is ingested or absorbed by the skin, it can result in severe health problems because it interferes with the way the body uses oxygen, including cardiac arrest and respiratory failure. Even in small quantities, it can cause nausea, dizziness, headaches and seizures.

Can cyanide in apple pips kill you?

While apple pips do contain cyanide, the toxin is present in such small qualities you would have to ingest a lot of pips to do any damage. There are no known instances of anyone harming themselves in this way.
