FAQs

Where would I display this sign?

Display this sign near any water sources that are acceptable for drinking.

How do I install the sign?

They are adhesive, so they will stick to walls and tiled surfaces. Changes in water quality, such as unusual taste, odor, or discoloration, may serve as a not drinking water sign, signaling potential issues with the pump that require servicing.

Can the sign get wet?

These signs are waterproof.

What is the purpose of a "Drinking Water" sign, and where should it be displayed?

Our “Drinking Water” signs are a way of letting your employees, customers and visitors know that the water in that particular tap is safe to drink. They are especially useful if other taps in your building are labelled “Not Drinking Water” as they provide extra reassurance that it is safe to drink the water drawn from the “Drinking Water” tap. It may even help to remind people to stay hydrated. “Drinking Water” signs need to be stuck to the wall immediately behind the drinking water tap in question, clearly indicating the safety of the water from that particular tap.

Why are “Drinking Water” signs essential in public and commercial spaces?

Safety signs come in a number of colours which signify different things – red for fire-related warnings, blue for mandatory instructions, yellow for hazard warnings, and green for ‘no danger’ or to indicate safety measures such as fire exits, the location of the first aid kit, and the location of safe drinking water. It is crucial that people are 100% certain that water from a particular tap is safe to drink, especially if there are other cold taps in the building from which the drinking water isn’t safe.

Are there specific regulations or standards that govern the installation of “Drinking Water” signs?

The Health and Safety Executive has guidelines on the use of safety signs where there is a significant risk to health and safety where the “use of a sign can further reduce the risk”. Although it is very clear on the fact that “safety signs are not a substitute for other methods of control”. The guidelines state there’s no requirement to use safety signs where there isn’t a significant risk to health and safety; however, the use of a “Drinking Water” sign is hugely reassuring for everyone on the premises.

What information should be included on a compliant “Drinking Water” sign?

The Health and Safety Executive’s guidelines are that all safety signs should be self-explanatory. All safety signs are illustrated by pictograms in order to make them clearly understood by everyone, including those who don’t speak English. However, the HSE also advises it’s a good idea to explain the meaning of the sign in order to make the meaning clearer. There is no ambiguity about the meaning of our “Drinking Water” sign.

How often should “Drinking Water” signs be inspected and maintained?

All safety signs should be regularly maintained in order to continue performing their function. Our vinyl signs are waterproof and are very easy to clean – just wipe them over while you’re cleaning the walls they’re stuck to. If your “Drinking Water” sign shows any signs of damage, simply replace it with a new one.
