Fluoride Analysis

In many areas of the UK and other countries around the world, fluoride is added to our drinking water as a way of helping prevent tooth decay. People who live in areas with added fluoride in their water have significantly lower numbers of tooth decay than those who live in areas that don’t.

Water is naturally fluoridated, although the levels are generally low. However, in some water areas, the level of naturally occurring fluoride is 1 milligram per litre (1 mg/l), which is considered to be the ideal fluoridation level. The maximum limit for fluoridation is 1.5 milligrams per litre. If the level of fluoride exceeds this limit, the Drinking Water Inspectorate has the power to enforce action.

FAQs

What is fluoride?

Fluoride is a mineral that naturally occurs in soils and water, as well as food and drink. It is added to toothpaste as it helps to strengthen tooth enamel, which is why it’s used in toothpaste as well as added to public water supplies.

Fluoride is also used by manufacturers in the production of medical imaging, aluminium products, steel, Teflon, cleaning products and pesticides.

What are the effects of excessive levels of fluoride in the water?

There are suggestions that fluoride can lead to serious health and developmental problems, but there is no clear evidence that the addition of fluoride in drinking water at recommended levels is harmful to human health.

If the fluoride levels are in an excess of 1.5mg/l it can result in dental mottling (fluorosis) in children’s teeth. In fact, fluorosis is more prevalent in areas where additional fluoride has been added to the drinking water.

Prolonged consumption of water with excessive levels of fluoride can lead to skeletal fluorosis, which is associated with osteosclerosis, calcification of tendons and ligaments, and bone deformities.
