FAQs

How does lithium get into groundwater?

Even though it is possible to recycle lithium batteries, many are sent to a landfill where the lithium leaches into groundwater. Lithium from drugs comes from untreated sewage that has been discharged directly into the waters.

Can lithium be good for us?

Scientists have discovered a link between reduced rates of suicide in areas where there are naturally occurring levels of lithium in the drinking water. It is used in medicine as a mood stabiliser and there has been suggestion of further studies to see if there is merit in adding it to the water in the same way as fluoride is to help improve mental health. However, exposure to lithium in clinical doses can have side effects such as sickness, nausea, diarrhoea or, more severely, impaired thyroid and kidney function.
