Why do we need to test water for mineral oil?

Mineral oil used in mechanical lubricants can coat the inside of your water pipes and cause the formation of sludge which can affect the efficiency of your machinery. As the lubricant degrades, it can produce an acid byproduct which will then attack the equipment.

What are the health risks of mineral oils to humans and animals?

Purified mineral oil is safe to be used topically on humans, but does have health risks if it is ingested. If large amounts are ingested, it can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach pain. With long-term exposure, there is an increased risk of cancer.

If large quantities of mineral oils get into the environment, entire ecosystems can be disrupted, with a consequent impact on aquatic life.
