Nitrite Analysis
Nitrite plays an important role in business activities. It can be used as a food preservative, as well as a corrosion inhibitor, and an agricultural fertiliser. However, if nitrite is present in high concentrations, it poses risks to the environment as well as human health. As a result of nitrite’s high toxicity, a limit of 1 mg/L has been imposed on drinking water which is why it needs monitoring.

FAQs
How Do Nitrites Get into My Water?
Fertilisers are the main source of unsafe levels of nitrites entering our water supplies. This can be through run-off from agricultural land, golf courses and gardens. In the natural world, nitrate can seep into the water table through rocks and soil. It can also be formed when plants and animal waste decomposes and seeps into the water table. Nitrate contamination can be a problem in private wells and boreholes.
What are the Health Effects of Nitrite Exposure?
Excessive amounts of nitrite in the water can have a negative impact on human health as well as the natural environment. When ingested through drinking water, nitrite – and its chemical relative nitrate – can affect the way blood carries oxygen, resulting in methemoglobinemia which causes the skin to turn a bluish colour, decreased blood pressure, increased heart rate, headaches, stomach cramps and vomiting. Bottle fed babies under six months old are most at risk of methemoglobinemia, which is more commonly known as blue baby syndrome. In the natural environment, large concentrations of nitrite will encourage algae growth which depletes oxygen levels making it impossible for wildlife to survive.
What’s the difference between nitrites and nitrates?
Nitrites and nitrates both pose similar risks to human health, but they have a slightly different chemical makeup. Both contain nitrogen and oxygen, but in different concentrations. Nitrite has one nitrogen and two oxygen atoms (NO2) whereas nitrate has one nitrogen and three oxygen atoms (NO3).
