How are VOCs harmful?

VOCs are emitted as gases escaping from solids or liquids and evaporate into the atmosphere. As they are composed of a variety of chemicals, the risks to health can vary. Symptoms can include headaches, sore throat, dizziness, nausea, skin allergies, and fatigue. Long term exposure to VOCs can have adverse health effects such as damage to the liver, kidney and central nervous system, or cancer.

How do VOCs get into the water system?

Unfortunately, VOCs get into the environment as a result of human activity, through spills, leaks or illegal dumping. VOCs dumped on land will soak into the ground eventually making their way into aquifers, streams and rivers.
