Poly Nuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons Analysis

Our PolyNuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons analysis kits are essential for ensuring your water source is safe from PAHs.

Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are commonly found in the environment as a result of incomplete combustion of tobacco, tar, and fuels. The less efficient the burning is, the more PAHs are released. They are carcinogenic compounds and every environmental organisation considers the compounds to be of great concern.

PAHs can cause both short- and long-term health hazards, including cancer, impaired immunity, breathing problems, kidney damage, liver damage and more. To protect human health, their concentration in water is strictly regulated.

FAQs

What Are Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons?

Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are toxic and carcinogenic compounds that are commonly found in the environment as a result of the pollution caused by rapid industrialisation and urbanisation. They are persistent pollutants, found globally in aquatic and land ecosystems, and in the atmosphere. The remediation of PAHs is a global concern.

What’s the difference between Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons?

Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are both referred to as PAHs and the terms often seem to be used interchangeably. The definition of polynuclear is ‘having multiple nuclei’ whereas the definition of polycyclic is ‘having two or more rings of atoms in the molecule’. Both types of PAHs are released into the atmosphere through incomplete combustion and have a number of sources including road vehicles, ships, aircraft, in the generation of industrial power, oil refining, waste incineration and the use of wood and coal for heating and cooking.

How long does the test take?

Laboratory testing takes at least 10-14 days.

What do I get once the test is complete?

Through our UKAS accredited analysis, you will receive the results from the test as well as a certificate.
