Radium (226) Analysis

This test kit is the perfect solution to discovering how safe your water is in respect to radium levels.

Radium-226 in nature is found in varying concentrations in virtually all kinds of rocks and soils that contain natural uranium. It occurs naturally in waters through interaction with uranium-bearing minerals, as well as a result of waste from the industrial exploitation of mineral resources. It is also among the most toxic long-lived alpha-emitters present in environmental samples, as well as one of the most widespread.

The requirement for the determination of radium has become a matter of interest in public health due to its hazardous nature with regards to internal exposure, particularly affecting the bones.

Radium is a known cancer-causing substance. Exposure to high levels of radium can lead to higher chances of bone, liver and breast cancer.

FAQs

Why is Radium-226 hazardous?

Radium is a highly radioactive element. It can be found in drinking water and if it is ingested in high doses, radium can cause cancers, particularly bone and lung cancer, as well as other health problems such as anaemia, breaking teeth and cataracts. Some of these health problems take years to develop.

What is Radium-226?

Radium-226 is a radioactive substance that is found in nature. It is present in uranium ores and is released when uranium is refined. When it enters the body it becomes a serious health risk. Radium was famously discovered by Pierre and Marie Curie in 1898. In the first half of the 20th century it was used to treat cancer and tumours (Radium-223 is still used to shrink tumours today). However, it was commonly used in luminous paint used on the dials in watches and clocks until the 1960s. Famously, many of the women who hand painted the dials died of radiation poisoning after daily exposure to radium.
