Strontium Analysis

Strontium is a metal that is found in water, soils and the air and naturally occurring amounts in water, food and the atmosphere which aren’t harmful. After processing, strontium is used in medicine as well as in the nuclear industry. The most commonly processed strontium – strontium-90 – is produced through nuclear fission, making it radioactive and therefore dangerous. It is widely found in the environment as a result of nuclear testing in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as from nuclear reactor waste.

What are the risks of strontium?

If children are exposed to high levels of natural strontium, there is a risk there may be problems with the development of their bones and teeth, resulting in bone deformities that are referred to as ‘strontium rickets’. However, exposure to strontium-90 is a concern for all of us. Once it is ingested, it behaves like calcium and is likely to end up in the bones and teeth where it replaces the existing calcium and magnesium, and can cause cancers of the bone, bone marrow and the soft tissues around the bone.

How does strontium get into our water?

In nature, high levels of strontium can get into the water from aquifers that are located in strontium-rich bedrocks. Processed strontium can also get into the environment from phosphate fertilisers, as well as industrial milling and coal burning.
