Sulphates are chemicals that are naturally found in water, rocks, soil, plants and food. We use sulphates to produce many products such as dyes, glass, paper, soaps, textiles, fertilisers, insecticides and chemicals. Sulphates also have a variety of industrial applications and are used in metal and plating, wood pulp, mining, leather processing and sewage treatment. It is therefore common to find high levels of sulphate in trade effluent that needs to be removed before the wastewater can be discharged.

High levels of sulphates in the water system can cause a buildup of scale which can affect the efficiency of equipment and machinery.

How does sulphate affect drinking water?

High concentrations of sulphates in drinking water give it a bitter and unpleasant taste. It may have a laxative effect on humans, but otherwise is not a concern for health.

How do sulphates get into the water?

Sulphates get into the water through discharges as a result of industrial processes. Atmospheric sulphates from fossil fuels also contribute to the sulphate content of surface water. When sulphur trioxide combines with water vapour, it creates a dilute sulphuric acid which becomes what we refer to as ‘acid rain’.
