Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) Analysis

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is the most common parameter for water quality analysis. The dissolved solids are any mineral, salt or metal that are not pure H2O. TDS come from a number of natural and man-made sources. In nature, minerals enter the water when it runs through rocks into the water courses. Man-made TDS can include pesticides/herbicides from agricultural runoff, sewage, lead from old piping, chlorine from treatment plants etc.

FAQs

What is TDS in Water?

Total dissolved solids (TDS) are organic and inorganic materials – such as metals, minerals, salts, and ions – that have been dissolved in water and can easily pass through a 2-micrometre filter. Sometimes TDS are added to water, for example mineral additives to enhance bottled mineral water.

Why do we test for TDS?

The TDS analysis is a good indicator of water purity. The fewer TDS, the purer the water. Knowing the TDS level of water will help you determine how much treatment is needed, as well as provide a measure of the success of the filtering and purification process. TDS analysis is especially important when it comes to manufacturing, medical, pharmaceutical and agricultural applications.

What are some of the Risks for Total Dissolved Solids?

Getting TDS levels correct is a balancing act. Low levels of TDS in nature can be unhealthy for plants and fish. Whereas high levels of TDS can lead to scaling in pipes which can cause blockages and damage, or corrosion which could introduce toxins into the water supply.
